Week 12

Hi Masters families,
We had a wonderful Week 12! Thank you moms and students for the amazingly fun review game. I hope everyone enjoyed the game, I had a great time seeing how much material you have all mastered. Now is a wonderful time to start setting your goals about Memory Master, Excellence or Power. After the "Show What You Know" on Week 11 and the review game this week I know all of you can accomplish great things. Pray about your goals and try to decide now what you would like to aim for at the end of the year. Congratulations Becknall family on winning the million dollar prize, I hope you have time over the break to play and enjoy the "Homeschoolopoly" game.

Thank you to all of the families for the thoughtful gift card. I am looking forward to some shopping time over the break and I know just what I would like to get. You all are truly a blessing to me.

Are You Smarter Than A Masters Student?

Dear Masters moms,

Week Twelve is on the way and fall semester is drawing to a close. Thank you moms for helping to make next week a fun and memorable time by participating in the review game, "Are You Smarter Than a Masters Student?" You are very brave and love your children dearly, I appreciate all of your support so much. I hope some great memories will be made. In addition to the game, I am planning to bring hot chocolate and popcorn for refreshments on Tuesday.

This is the schedule I am planning:
9:30-10:30 Tin Whistle and New Grammar
10:30-11:30 Refreshments and Review Game
11:30-12:00 Science
RULES OF THE GAME:
Each participating mom will team up with their son or daughter as contestants in the game. The remaining students will be in the class of expert master students. The parent/student team will be answering questions together.

GAME SETUP:Each parent/student team will decide which class level and subject questions they would like to be asked by placing a check mark in the appropriate box of the Game/Score sheet(this will be provided at the start of the game).
There are five Class Level options : ABC-Abecedarian, AP- Apprentice, J1 - Journeymen One, J2 -Journeymen Two, and M-Masters
There are five Subject options: History (includes history sentences and a few timeline questions), Geography, English/Latin, Science, Math
Together you will choose 2 questions from each grade level and 2 from each subject category, 10 questions total. In order for you to be asked the Million Dollar Question the mom/student team will need to answer 10 questions correctly.

HOW TO PLAY:
1. The contestant team tells the tutor which of the checked off subject/class level questions on the Game/Score sheet they want to answer. For example, the contestant could ask for Journeymen 1 Math.
2. Secondly, the tutor asks the question.
The contestant can do one of the following:
A. ANSWER THE QUESTION CORRECTLY- If the answer is correct, then draw a circle around the question box on the Game/Score sheet and fill in the first circle for the $1,000 money level. If the answer is incorrect the contestant leaves the game.
B. HELP - If the contestant team does not know the correct answer, they have one opportunity to Peek and one opportunity to Copy a Masters Student answer, from the students in the expert Masters class. In the game the contestant team can only use these 2 helps 1 time each.
PEEK- Roll the die and peek at that student's answer. The contestant team can choose to use that answer or not. If you use their answer and it is correct you mark your Game/Score sheet and move on to the next money level. If the answer is incorrect the contestant team is out of the game.
COPY- Get help by asking to copy one of the Masters students answers. Roll the die and the tutor will read their answer. If it is correct you mark your Game/Score sheet and move on to the next money level. If incorrect, you leave the game.

3. After 10 questions are answered correctly, get ready for the Million Dollar Question. The tutor will select the Million Dollar Question and give the Masters level subject area. The contestant team can choose to go for it or drop out! If the question is answered correctly the contestant wins! If you decide to drop out you are still a winner for answering 10 questions correctly. All of the correctly answered questions will be rewarded by Massive Memory Marbles(for the first 5 correct answers) and Mega Memory Marbles(for the next 5 correct answers).

In an effort to maximize playing time all moms please go over the rules of the game with your student. Everyone will participate so it will help to know how the game is played. This is very similar to the television game show, I adapted the rules from the board game version.

I hope this will be a fun game for everyone and most importantly give some great review in all of the subjects. If the game goes too quickly and the contestants are eliminated in short order I may ask the moms to allow one of the students in the expert masters class to switch with your child and let them have a chance to play on a contestant/mom team. This is only if you are willing to do this, just let me know on Tuesday. I am trying to think of all of the possible scenarios. I really doubt the game will end too quickly after the impressive memory recitation I saw on Tuesday, these students are ready for just about anything and it is obvious you have all been drilling often! Thank you and have a great week!

Blessings,
Mrs. Gaines

Masterful Masters

Hello Masters families!

What an awesome Week Eleven! Yesterday we had an unusual classroom setup, but as usual all of the students rolled with the changes. Thank you all for your flexibility. The changes seemed to precipitate a bit more talking and silliness, but I think the nearing Christmas season and end of the semester had something to do with it as well. I want to take a moment to express how blessed I was by each of your children's enthusiasm and effort during our "Show What You Know" review time. It was such a precious time to carve out just a few minutes and watch each one of them individually shine. God was truly glorified through each one of them. Moms, the fruit of your labor each day in your homeschool was revealed. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. To all of the students, I just want to say I was blown away by your quick and accurate memory work recitation! AMAZING MASTERS! I predict we will have a large group of Memory Masters, Power and Excellence winners. Altogether in the "Show What You Know" you earned 157 Memory Marbles! Additionally in the review game(thank you moms) you earned 42 more marbles for a total of 199 marbles!!!

I also wanted to mention there were so many moments of Christ's light shining on Tuesday- Moms serving with love and kindness - one student kindly helping another with the science project - students happily sharing music during tin whistle - a student helping me set up the classroom, without being asked - siblings looking out for each other - students showing honesty and integrity - friends working and learning together, cheering each other on - students volunteering to help clean up at the end of class - moms with unending love and dedication to their children - our cups runneth over at Greensboro CC!!!

Week Ten-Two To Go!

Hello Masters Families!
What a fun Tuesday we had this week. I hope you are all enjoying the opportunity to stay inside at home during this cold and rainy week. The girls and I have enjoyed learning over some hot tea this week, I actually love the cold weather. Carlyssa, we missed you greatly on Tuesday and hope your family recovers quickly. We will be praying for a speedy healing.
Thank you Addie, Elisabeth, and Mollie for the fascinating presentations this week. Addie, it was great to visit some challenging optical illusions. Jonathan and Mollie put forth great effort to figure them out! You did a good job presenting your information with strong volume and poise. Elizabeth, we enjoyed your humorous story this week. Great work on your eye contact and expression. Mollie, you did a wonderful job clearly communicating the message of Baalam and the donkey from the Bible. I think everyone enjoyed your visual aid/snacks as well. Excellent volume and eye contact. Well, this concludes our formal presentations for fall semester! I have seen considerable growth in all of the students with eye contact, confidence, volume, use of visual aids, articulation and poise. Thank you to all of the moms and students for your hard work this semester, enjoy the break!
In week 11 and 12 I really want all of the families have time to focus on reviewing the grammar for this semester. To encourage this review, each student was able to choose one subject to "Show What They Know" for Weeks 1-10 grammar. Then to offer a challenge, each student recieved an additional subject to practice. This is what I have planned for presentation/review time:
We will begin by sitting together and sharing one thing your family does at home to practice/drill your memory work. Hopefully this will stir up some inspiration and ideas for others to put into practice at home. Then, I will be asking the moms to help by playing a review game with the students while I individually allow each student to "show me what they know" in their subjects. I am planning to follow the same format that Mrs. Varnell will use in testing for Memory Master, Excellence and Power at the end of the year. This will hopefully benefit the students in two ways, motivation to bulk up their review at the end of the semester and give them experience proofing(testing) their memory work with the tutor in the same method used at the end of the year. Although Memory Master, Excellence, and Power are all optional goals in CC, hopefully this will be a great practice for those planning to go for it and it might show students who were not going to attempt it that they can achieve this goal, too.
These are the subjects for each student, the first one was their choice, the second one was chosen for them.
Mollie- History Sentences and Science
Hannah- Geography and English
Elizabeth- Science and History Sentences
Maddie- History Sentences and Science
Carlyssa- Please choose any 2 Subjects
Addie- Science and Geography
Kody- Timeline and Math
Ross- Geography and Math
Jonathan- History Sentences and Latin
Harrison- Timeline and English
This is how I will proof each subject:
Timeline: Recite from Creation through St. Francis of Assisi- if they get stumped I will give them the last card they recited and they can continue from that point.
History Sentences: I will use the prompt listed in the curriculum guide each week or listed in your Memory Master folder. For ex. "Tell me about Hinduism..."
Science: I will ask the science question for each week, it is recommended that the student repeats the question with the answer or answer in a complete sentence. The questions in science are as important as the answers.
Geography: I will use the guidelines presented by Mrs. Varnell in her post"Geography Clarification." Some locations can be pointed to and some must be labeled on a blank map.
Math: The student can write or recite the 1's-12's up to 12x12, 13's up to 13x13, 14's up to 14x14, and 15's up to 15x15, squares up to 15x15.
English: Quote the definition of a preposition and list the prepositions.
Latin: I will ask what is in bold in your curriculum guide or Memory Master folder. For example, "Latin 3rd Declension Noun Endings".
DRILL! DRILL! DRILL!

Memory Tips and Techniques for Week Ten:
History Timeline:Alfred the Great- fist up
Otto the I and the H.R.E. - 1 finger for first

English- Through- Make a tunnel with left arm and go through with right hand, throughout- throw arms out, to- hold up 2 fingers, toward- step forward
Math- practice squares writing out up to 15x15, use the Audio CD song to help
Geography- Japan: A treasure hunt in Japan- Search for the key in Kyoto to unlock the treasure chest in Tokyo. Inside there is a token and a treasure map that will lead you to the top of Mt. Fuji, to the shores of the Pacific Ocean and to the Sea of Japan. Perhaps you will discover the greatest treasures of all are all around us and in Christ Jesus.
Latin- Drill using your chart and singing to "Here we Go Looby-Loo" There are 4 o's in Looby-Loo and that will remind you of 4th Declension.

Whooo Had Fun on Week Six?

Hello Masters!

What a great week, it was wonderfully packed with review and as one Masters student said,"It was the best science all year!" Thank you moms and students for all of the hard work you are doing at home, the studying is really showing in large amounts of Memory Marbles and great teamwork during review. Keep working on that Memory Work! I see a lot of Memory Masters in the making! Next week we will do a concentrated review on geography and science. Practice CLEARLY and NEATLY labeling the locations Weeks 1-6 on your map this week, we will "Show What You Know" next week in class to earn MASSIVE MEMORY MARBLES!

Thank you for the amazing presentations this week. We continue to be blessed as we learn more about one another through our presentations this year. Carlyssa, your visual aid featuring fascinating facts about your family captivated us. Great work on eye contact and volume. Addie, it was awesome learning about your talent and enthusiasm for swimming. You displayed excellent planning and organization. Your visual aids helped to explain your topic and taught us about the equipment and rewards of the sport. Elizabeth, your summer adventures were amazing. Thank you for your diligent work on your visual aid, it displayed great planning. Good use of eye contact and clear pronunciation. Week Four

Greetings Masters families!

Thank you for a wonderful week four. It was great fun learning with you and creating gooey plant cells yesterday! I would like to thank you for great improvement on the chatter during class. I will continue to ask all of you to work on eliminating the extra talking and comments during teaching time to help us get through all of our grammar, art and science each week. Thank you to all of my Masters kids for serving by helping with clean up at the end of class, you were all a blessing.

We enjoyed a wide variety of presentations yesterday. Carlyssa, we loved your engaging brain twister and a reminder to be mindful of everything we hear and see. You really warmed up our brains! Maddie, thank you for a fact filled presentation on Harriet Tubman. Your presentation exhibited great preparation, organization, and use of time. I learned quite a few things I had never heard before. Elizabeth, we all loved your expository speech on your family. Great use of visual aids and and fun facts to "expose" your family to us. It was also a great idea to show pictures of you and your siblings at different ages. I could really tell you worked hard to prepare. Addie, what a fun and interesting story to share with us about your wonderful family. Adventures and memories like that are exciting! You included a great use of visual aids and very organized preparation. We all loved the turtle pictures and your beloved stuffed turtle. It was also a great idea to include research about the scientific classifications of the Loggerhead turtle. Kody, you engaged all of us with your energetic and humorous expository speech on sea creatures. I know parents and students learned something new and all of the winners enjoyed their prizes. Kody, great work on your planning and research. This week we will be hearing presentations from our odd week presenters: Jonathan, Harrison, Hannah, Mollie, and Ross. Your optional speech topic is an expository speech on your family, but all topics are welcome. The speech topics and skills we are focusing on are listed in your take-home folder.

As you prepare remember the following things:

*confidence(3 second rule)

*eye contact

*volume

*use of time(2-3 minute limit)

Remember if you are looking up and making good eye contact with your audience your volume will improve. Also, when you practice have your parent time you and limit your speech to 2-3 minutes so we can give everyone a comfortable amount of time to present.

*****Memory Tips and Techniques for Week 4*****

IN ALL OF THE SUBJECTS POSSIBLE WE ARE TRYING TO HEAR, SEE, SAY AND DO TO MASTER OUR MEMORY WORK!!!

History Sentence: 7 Wonders of the Ancient World To learn some background information on each of the seven wonders read your coloring sheets I included in your take-home packet this week. Here are the motions we learned to remember the 7 wonders:

Colossus of Rhodes-stand feet apart and swing arms back to front(showing his stance and that boats would pass through)

The Great Pyramids- make a pyramid shape with your arms

The Mausoleum- cross arms across chest in an X

The Temple of Artemis- make a capital T with your arms

The Hanging Gardens-put arms out bent at the elbows with your hands hanging down

Pharos Lighthouse-swirl your hand around your head like a rotating top of a lighthouse

Statue of Zeus-assume the position of the statue with a scepter in your left hand and Nike the goddess of victory in your right hand

Timeline: Practice all four Weeks from memory-drill, drill, drill
Tip for last three cards: Later Tro Pho

Latin: We repeated the 1st declension noun endings with a focus on correct pronunciation. Use the pronunciation guide included in your take home packet to practice proper pronunciation. Also, use your chart in the take home folder to write your memory work as you drill. Memory tip for the different tunes-1st declension is set to the song"Rain, Rain Go Away" so hold 1 finger up(1st declension) and test for rain.

Math: 7's and 8's Practice your multiplication facts at home each week and we will continue to try for MASSIVE MEMORY MARBLES by completing 60 facts correctly in 2 minutes or less. Every week students are reaching this goal and getting closer and closer to reaching this goal by increasing their speed and accuracy. Amazing work on your math facts- GO MASTERS! I also recommended using the skip counting songs and chart in your Take-Home folder as needed to work on these higher tables.

English: Use your left hand in front of you in a stationary position and your right hand to help act out our prepositions for this week: before(right hand before left) behind(right hand behind left) below(right hand below left) beneath(left hand beneath right) beside(hands and forearms together) Have fun getting faster and faster!!!!

Geography: Hittite Empire-locate, trace, and then label! Remember the Hittite Empire was known for the first use of iron weapons and for writing the first treaties.

Science: We chanted the parts of a plant cell and reviewed them by drawing and labeling a plant cell. If you need some tips here are some motions and a song just to trigger the memory.

Nucleus (make a round circle with your hands) Cytoplasm (hands above your eyes as if you are looking at something), Vacuole(vacuuming motion), Mitochondria(show your mighty muscles), Cell Membrane(point to your brain), Cell Wall(Make a wall in front of you with your 2 arms), Chloroplasts(AAAAH I'm turning green-look at your arm)- silly I know, but similar motions to these helped my younger daughter last week. Also, here is a song you can use if your student prefers music for memorization.

What are parts of a plant cell ?(Twinkle, twinkle little star)

Nucleus, Cytoplasm (how I wonder what you are)

Vacuole, Mitochondria (up above the sky so high)

Cell Membrane, Cell Wall (like a diamond in the sky)

and then Chloroplasts (Twinkle, twinkle little star)

are some parts of a plant cell. (how I wonder what you are)

Don't forget to record your Memory Work, Presentation Preparation, and Map Drawing/Labeling on your Learning Log. NEXT WEEK THE CC STORE WILL BE OPENED FOR ALL STUDENTS TO PURCHASE SOME FUN TREATS. YOU HAVE WORKED HARD MASTERS STUDENTS, WAY TO GO!!!

*****Take Home Sheets for Bonus Classical Cash******

Moms and students, any sheets/activities that I send home with your student each week are OPTIONAL learning opportunities to deepen their understanding of the grammar we have covered and to extend the information we are learning. As a reward for their additional work I do reward them with Classical Cash as they are turned in each week. SO PLEASE ENJOY THEM AS YOUR TIME AT HOME PERMITS.

Geography Map Drawing sheet for Europe and Asia

Blank Plant Cell sheet to label the parts we learned this week

Hello Masters families,

Another challenging and fascinating week has passed and all of the Masters students are rising to the highest of expectations. We began with presentations today and I would like to commend all of our presenters on well prepared presentations. We enjoyed two literature recitations: a beautiful poem about a lighthouse by Carlyssa and a humorous poem about a messy room by Addie. We learned how to make jam in an instructional speech with visual aids by Elizabeth and we were educated with fun and fascinating facts on rodents by Kody. Saturday, September 5, 2009

Hello Masters families,
I hope you are all having a blessed and restful weekend. I had an excellent question arise for this week's "optional" presentation topic and I thought I would share it with everyone in case others had any confusion. I was asked "If a student is presenting a piece of literature to read or recite are they required to have an outline?"
If you have chosen to recite or read a piece of literature for your presentation this week you may not need to prepare an rough outline/final outline as suggested on your Learning Log. The Learning Log is just a "general" guide for you to use at home as your child prepares each week for their presentation. This is competely flexible according to the topic and to what you as the teacher want them to do at home. So no, they do not have to prepare an outline. However, if your student does not prepare an outline and you would like to attach a copy of the piece of literature they are reading or reciting in the place of a rough outline/final outline I will place it in their Classroom Binder as a record of their presentation topics for this year. I hope this helps, please let me know if there are any other concerns.
Many blessings,
Tina Gaines

Great Beginnings

Dear Masters Families,

What great beginning to our year! We had an informative start to our day with Impromptu Introductions for presentations. I already see new friendships forming and old friendships strengthening on our first day. Today we focused on getting to know our audience to build trust as we present each week. For our next round of presentations please practice at home using the 3 second rule to begin and end your presentation with confidence. Optional ideas for presentations are listed in your Take-Home Folder. Presenters for Week Two are: Elizabeth, Addie, Carlyssa, Maddie, and Kody. ***Students do not forget to record your work on your Learning Log as you prepare for your presentation. It will earn you alot of Classical Cash .***

Included in your student's Take-Home Folder is a suggested schedule for memorizing the Bible passage for Cycle One, Exodus 20:1-17. This Bible passage is not required for Memory Master, but I have included because I felt it was a great guide for pacing your learning at home.

You will also see a sheet called Math Sound Off, this is an additional project we will do as a class for the end of the year closing program. Today I did not have time to introduce it, but please read over the letter to introduce yourselves with the idea and we will start learning the material next week. It should be fun!

Parents, the following tips were used to help your child learn the memory work for this week. Use them if they will help to master the material, or just to increase the fun while drilling. Hopefully they can remember them based on the brief descriptions below.

Memory Tips and Techniques for Week One:

***Remember to record your memory drilling on your Learning Log.***

Timeline: Practice using the cards early in the week to learn the timeline and advance to full mastery-reciting from memory by the end of the week.

Latin- Slap Lap X Clap Hands X-don't go too fast!

Math- Practice your 1's and 2's Multiplication Tables- Next week we will test our Multiplication Mastery for MASSIVE Memory Marbles.

English- A preposition relates a noun(high 5/knuckle) or a pronoun(high 5/ knuckle) to another word(low 5/low 5).

Geography- Locate-Trace-Draw-***record your practices on your Learning Log***

Week One BONUSES for Classical Cash and Memory Marbles:

**Please enjoy these projects at home as your time allows.***

Art- Complete the Drawing Sheet to practice OiLS- 5 Basic elements of Shape

And we're off....

Hello Masters families,

The time has arrived for our exciting journey to begin. It was wonderful to meet all of you on Tuesday night and get acquainted as we launch into learning together this year. Carlyssa, we missed you on last Tuesday, but are looking forward to meeting you tomorrow on our first day. Hold on tight as we will all learn a load of information balanced with serious/silly tone.

Just a reminder to parents: please have your student bring a backpack to transport their Take-Home Folder tomorrow and have them bring pencils for some writing in class. If any mom would like to volunteer to be an official mom helper (I could use more than one if the interest is there) please let me know tomorrow. It would work best if this is a mom who does not have students in the other classes. Most of the moms will be present during class, but this would be a second pair of eyes and hands to assist the students during classroom activities. I know all of the moms will be there to pitch in, so thank you in advance for all of your help.

Tomorrow will be a jam packed day as we learn our routines and classroom procedures, please review the parent letter, handout and Colossians 1:9-12 as we prepare our hearts for Week One. I also ask that you remember our class and the entire Foundations family in prayer as we begin the 2009-10 year together.

Many blessings,
Tina Gaines
